Japanese Navy Officer Kyu-Gunto Sword
An example of the Naval Kyu-Gunto sword that was purchased by an officer who had some limits on his budget. The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 32 1/2 inches, with a blade length of approximately 25 1/2 inches. The guard, back strap and scabbard mounts are gilt on brass, with noticeable areas of wear to the gilt finish. The grip is white ray skin with triple wire wrap, with the center, beaded, wire being broken and missing in several spots. The guard features two cherry blossoms with nine leaves. The sword blade is bright without any temper line or habaki (collar) at the top of the blade. The blade has no nicks or cracks. The scabbard is black leather rather than sharkskin, and the collar fitting on the top of the scabbard is loose.
