Identified WWII 15th Air Force Medals, Photographs and Insignia Group


The group is comprised of the medals, insignia, and photographs of Army Air Force Technical Sergeant Lyle B. Schaffner. The group is comprised of:

-A cased, full wrap brooch Air Medal, unnamed as awarded in the theater of operations. The medal is in very good condition, with some spots to the finish. The case shows age toning to the gold decoration on the lid.

-A clutch fastener ribbon bar, with ribbons for the Air Medal with 3 oak leaf clusters, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the European Campaign Medal with two campaign stars.

-Army Good Conduct Medal, with slot brooch suspension, unnamed.

-European Campaign Medal, with crimp brooch suspension.

-World War II Victory Medal, with crimp brooch suspension.

-Sterling silver, full size 3 inch, pin back, Air Gunner wing.

-Italian made, bullion 15th Air Force shoulder patch, removed from a uniform and showing some fading of the blue base silk.

-Two overseas service chevrons.

-A pair of machine embroidered, wool, Technical Sergeant chevrons.

-14 photographs, which include a colorized portrait photograph of Schaffner, approximately 8 3/4 inches by 9 3/4 inches; photographs of air crew and individuals; and multiple photographs of a crashed landed B-24 bomber bearing the name “Borrowed Time”, an aircraft of the 739th Bomb Squadron of the 454th Bomb Group, which crashed on March 19, 1944. The reverse side of the photograph bears the handwritten notation of “Sgt. Schaffner on top of crashed plane”.

The group includes a photocopy of the award card for Schaffner’s Air Medal and three oak leaf clusters.
