The ricasso is marked by Ames as the manufacturer on one side and on the other it is marked “U.S./GWC/1864” on three lines, the “1” and “4” on the date are light. The knuckle bow bears the inspector mark of “JH”. The blade is generally bright with only a few minor spots at which the plating has lifted. The hilt, knuckle bow, and fittings on the scabbard all have an old, uncleaned patina. The leather scabbard exhibits typical scuffs and scrapes, but it is complete and intact, with even some of the red wool within the scabbard throat fitting.
