Blood Stained Senninbari 1,000 Stitch Belt with “Saipan Banzai Attack” Annotation
The senninbari 1,000 stitch belt is quite bloodied and somewhat tattered. It bears the handwritten annotation of “Saipan 7 July Banzai Attack”. One fabric tie remains on the belt, with the other end lacking the tie and being tattered. The belt is approximately 37 inches long, exclusive of the tie cord. On July 7, 1944, the US Army 27th Infantry Division bore the brunt of the largest Banzai attack of the war. When the smoke cleared and the dust settled, over 4,000 Japanese troops were dead, and American dead and wounded numbered nearly 1,000.
