Battle Damaged Single Decal M40 Army Helmet by Vereinigte Deutsche Nikelwerke in the G.I.’s Shipping Crate

The exterior field gray combat paint is generally intact, showing some loss on the outside top of the dome as well as spots and scuffs typical of use in the combat theater. The army eagle decal is approximately 60 percent intact. The interior liner is present, showing wear and use. The interior side of the helmet is marked “NS 56”, indicating a size 56 helmet shell that was manufactured by the firm of Vereinigte Deutsche Nikelwerke. The chin strap is not present. The rear lower right edge of the helmet is damaged from what appears to be a bullet impact, while the top left rear of the helmet dome shows a bullet entry hole. The helmet is contained within the wooden crate in which the G.I. who captured the helmet shipped it home. The crate is approximately 15-3/4 inches wide by 8-3/4 inches tall by 12 inches deep.
