1943 Dated Poster War Stamps “Mystery Ship Shangri-La” Aircraft Carrier Fundraising Poster 20 by 26 1/2 Inches
The poster shows some light spots and typical fold lines, but it is in overall excellent condition. The poster proclaims that Americans could “bomb Tokyo with extra change”, and that the purchase of $1 in War stamps by every American would build the “mystery ship Shanri-La”. This was an aircraft carrier that would be launched in 1944, and which would earn two campaign stars in World War II and three in the Vietnam War. The naming of the ship was a radical departure from the general practice of the time, which was to name aircraft carriers after battles or previous US Navy ships. After the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, which had been secretly launched from the aircraft carrier Hornet, President Roosevelt answered a reporter’s question by saying that the raid had been launched from “Shangri-La”, the fictional faraway land of the James Hilton novel “Lost Horizon”.
