WWII Japanese Army Officer Shin Gunto Sword
The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 38 inches with a blade length of approximately 25-1/2 inches. The blade is somewhat dirty, with multiple spots and scratches. The blade is without chips or active rust, but exhibits a number of small nicks on the cutting edge. The tang has one hole, exhibits red rust, and is unmarked and unsigned. The tsuba is solid with gilt finish and cherry blossom motif. The grip is covered in dark skin, with a wrap in the traditional fashion in dark brown silk tape and showing service wear. The menuki beneath the wrapping on both sides is different from the normally seen style, this sword having menuki that show the Japanese paulownia leaf. The metal scabbard retains most of its original brown paint. The sword is in overall very good field used condition.
