Signed 1944 Dated Army Officer Shin Gunto Sword
The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 38 inches with a blade length of approximately 25 1/2 inches. The blade is relatively bright and it is without chips or active rust. The tang has one hole. It is dated January 1944 (Showa 19) on one side and the other side of the tang is signed "Kunihiro". The tsuba is plain, blackened brass. The grip is covered in white shark skin and it is almost completely covered with a wrap in the traditional fashion in dark brown silk tape. The fabric has become particularly dark from its exposure to the elements and from handling. The standard military menuki of three cherry blossoms is beneath the wrapping on both sides. The metal scabbard retains most of its original brown paint. The sword is in overall excellent field used condition.
