Model 1858 canteen, smooth sides with the circular concave slight depression on the reverse, and with a tan cotton cover that conceals three strap loops underneath. The canteen is a Civil War era piece that was recovered to conform to the 1874 regulations. The cover is stenciled on one side with "27 SEP. co.". On the other side is written an "A" or an "N" over the number "55". The 27th Separate Company was from Malone, New York, and formed the nucleus of Company M of the 203rd New York Infantry during the Spanish American War. The canteen has its full Model 1874 cotton drilling strap with adjustment slide buckle. The cover exhibits staining but no damage.
