Kriegsmarine Battle Cruiser Karlsruhe Cap Tally
Early machine woven Gothic script cap tally for an enlisted crew member of the Third Reich Light Battle Cruiser Karllsruhe. The tally is full length, at nearly 47 inches long. In April of 1940 the Karlsruhe was struck by two torpedoes from a British submarine off the coast of Norway and was left crippled. The crew was ordered by the Captain to abandon ship and the German Torpedo Boat "Greif", which was part of the flotilla, took the crew on board and then sank the Karlsruhe with two torpedoes. The gold thread embroidery has toned with age but the cap tally is in overall excellent condition.
