Exceptional Named WWI Trench Art Mess Kit
The mess kit is comprised of the aluminum dish and cover, both of which were extensively decorated and annotated by soldier Frank Kates of the American Expeditionary Force. The designs on the lid include an American eagle and a French Croix de Guerre along with Kates' name and the "American Expeditionary Force" designation. The sides and the underside of the dish are etched with the names, ranks, and home towns of the men with whom Kates served. The engravings of both the decorations and the names are very well done and not at all crude. An impressive example of trench art that would certainly make for an interesting research project to conclusively identify the unit in which Kates and the men who are named on the mess kit were serving during the war.
