Army Single Decal M18 Transitional Helmet
click for an even bigger image

This helmet was recently found in a barn in Pennsylvania. The M1918 helmet retains approximately 50% of its field gray paint, with the helmet wear exhibiting layers of paint that reflect its refurbishing for use during the Third Reich. The army eagle decal is approximately 90% intact with spots of surface rust. There are areas of surface rust on the exterior of the helmet shell where the paint has been lost, and there is rust on the interior dome. The size 56 Model 1931 liner is present although it is dry, exhibits flaking, and has a tear. There is no visible manufacturer code or size impressed into the helmet, with the original designation apparently having been covered by the re-painting of the helmet when it was prepared for Third Reich use. One liner rivet is missing on the right side and there is no chin strap.
