click for an even bigger image

A bound photo album comprised of 29 large photographs (all but one being about 4 3/4 by 6 1/2 inches in size) depicting the personnel and operations of one of the Imperial Army's elite sea assault units. The photographs depict the members of this unit, both officers and enlisted men, as well as operations of the unit, with photographs of landing boats at sea and on the beach. The album was evidently prepared for the men of the unit as a keepsake. Each page of the album has information printed in Japanese about the photograph. Additionally, there are several pages at the back of the album in which the owner wrote notations about the unit. The photographs show very clearly that many of the officers are wearing on their tunics the distinctive cloth badge of the sea assault forces. The unit depicted in this album fought in the Pacific, at Rabaul, at Peleliu, and in the Philippine Islands. The album bears a "secret" designation in red on the cover, intending that the album was only for members of the sea assault unit itself. The album is in overall excellent condition.
