Untouched M40 Combat Helmet
click for an even bigger image

An untouched and uncleaned M40 combat helmet. The exterior field gray paint is approximately 50% intact, with much surface dirt and grime, as well as some surface rust, that may well be obscuring more exterior paint. The interior of the shell is marked ET 62, indicating a size 62 shell manufactured by the firm of Eisenhuttenwerke in Thale. The leather liner is quite dry, but it is complete with the drawstring and intact. The end of the chin strap is torn off, but the remaining section has six holes and the buckle section is intact on the opposite side, such that the strap can still be fastened.
