WW2 Japanese Civil Defense Tobiguchi Fire Fighting Tool
click for an even bigger image

The Tobiguchi was a fire fighting tool issued to civil defense and police personnel for use in pulling apart burning buildings in order to keep fires from spreading. The shape of the tool led it to be referred to as a "Kite Beak", and its use as a weapon led it to be termed the "kenkatobi", or "fighting kite". This example has typical signs of use, with surface rust on the tool head and some relatively small cracks or chips to the wooden handle. There is kanji impressed into the blade of the tool (Some baby powder was applied to the blade to bring out the kanji for the photograph. The powder was then easily removed).
