A very scarce example of the Model 1878 American canteen as issued to the United States Marine Corps. The front center of the cover bears the large, clear "U.S.M.C." stencil. Near the bottom edge on the front is the stencil "R.I.A. 1909 G", indicating that the canteen was produced at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1909, with the Inspector's mark of "G being placed below the date. The canteen has the depressed dimple on the back side, and both triangular carrying strap mounts are attached. The cork stopper with brass collar and chain is present and intact. The cover shows some expected age toning and spots and the carrying strap is not present, but the canteen is in overall very good condition.
