Approximately 5 3/4 inches long, with a period note in pencil written on an envelope of the Reverend Walter Matos of Trinity Church in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. "Carbon from a Search Light of the Spanish Maria Teresa, raised from water a few months after the battle of Santiago de Cuba". The Infanta Maria Theresa was the flagship of the Spanish fleet at the battle of Santiago, Cuba. It was beached by the commander and its colors were struck after suffering extensive damage in the battle with the United States Navy.
