The helmet is in overall very good condition. There is typical age crazing to the patent leather surface, and a few scrapes. There was also a small hole in the rear of the helmet on one side, the hole being about 1/4 of an inch in diameter. At some point in the past this was addressed by applying a bit of filler material that was painted black. Once again, this appears to be quite old, and may well have been performed during the period of the helmet's use. There is wear to the field gray finish of the spike and there is minor surface rust on the lower portion of the front plate and on the chin strap buckles and side fasteners. The two cockades are present, although the Reich cockade is lacking the white color and is only black and red. The chinstrap is a reproduction. The interior liner shows wear and use but it is complete and intact, although lacking the drawstring. The size of "55" stenciled on the rear visor. The name of "Meyer" is written on the underside of the front visor. The helmet was arsenal refurbished with two front plate holes filled and two brass reinforced holes added.
