DESCRIPTION

A fine example of the Shin Gunto sword that was produced later in the war for officers of the Japanese Imperial Navy. The blade is approximately 22 inches long, with the sword having an overall length of approximately 36 inches when within the scabbard. The wooden handle is covered in a textured gray cloth rather than the usual ray skin, reflecting late war production. The grip is wrapped with olive green fabric in the traditional fashion. The standard military menuki of three cherry blossoms is beneath the wrap on each side. The scabbard is wood, with a black lacquer finish and gilt fittings. There are a number of small indentations in the surface of the scabbard, likely from the scabbard bumping into objects while being worn, but these indentations do not really mar the appearance of the scabbard and the lacquer finish remains intact. There is a plain blackened tsuba beneath the grip. The blade is bright steel and there are no cracks, chips, nicks, or active rust. Overall the blade is quite bright and in very good condition, with the typical light scratches and spots from wear in the field. The tang beneath the handle is unsigned but bears the anchor proof mark reflecting that the sword was produced for use by the Imperial Navy.
