Inert WWII Japanese Type 3 Ceramic Pottery Land Mine
click for an even bigger image

The Type 3 land mine with a terra cotta pottery body was developed both as a measure to preserve metal resources as well as to thwart mine detection devices. The Type 3 mine was intended for use as either an antipersonnel or antivehicular land mine. The mine is approximately 8 1/2 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. It is ceramic, with a dark brown exterior glaze. The body is hollow. The mine would have been filled with an explosive charge and a pressure-activated detonator would then have been inserted into the circular opening on top of the mine. This example has a very old chip to the base that s about 5/8 of an inch wide and 1/2 inch high. The chip does not penetrate the body of the mine and it does not effect its structural integrity.
