WWII Model 1883 Japanese Navy Officer Dress Sword
A fine example of a World War II period Model 1883 sword for officers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 33 inches, with a blade length of approximately 26 inches. The plated blade has some spots to it that might well respond to a careful cleaning, but it is quite bright overall. There is a visible acid etched temper line. There is a small spot near the tip on one side where the plating has lifted, but the blade remains very impressive. The pommel, back strap, guard, and scabbard fittings are gilded brass, with much of the gilt finish apparently remaining. The grip is ray skin and it is without cracks or chips. The shark skin scabbard is supple and in excellent condition.
