WWII Marine Corps Boxed European Campaign Medal
A fine example of the WWII crimp brooch European Campaign Medal within its original box, with the label indicating that this was one of the medals struck by the United States Mint specifically for award to U.S. Marines. The WWII medals produced exclusively for award to the Marine Corps are quite uncommon, and the European Campaign Medal for a Marine is particularly scarce given the relatively few Marines who served in the European Theater. Many of those who did were (like the actor Sterling Hayden, who played the corrupt police officer, Captain McCluskey in "The Godfather"), were Marine Corps personnel who were recruited by the OSS and who fought behind the lines in Europe during the war. The box shows typical wear and age and the medal is in excellent condition.
