The helmet has a rough exterior finish. There is light surface rust on the exterior shell, but much of the original field gray paint can be seen. The interior of the helmet has the riveted bale suspension system for the chin strap which characterized the M18 helmet. The M31 leather liner is a dark color, slightly stiff. There is no visible manufacturer code on the interior of the shell. The front lower right edge has a crack in the shell that is about 3/4 of an inch long.
