WWII Japanese Civil Defense Protective Fire Hood
A protective hood for wear by Civil Defense fire fighters in Japan during the war. The hood has an exterior shell of olive green cotton and is lined in blue wool, both natural fabrics that would resist the possibility of embers causing hood itself to catch fire. The hood has a large circular base to form a protective cape over the neck and shoulders. There is a large cloth issue label on the interior. The laces used to secure the hood are, interestingly, a pre-war type in which there are words in English, reflecting the widespread use of English in Japanese manufacturing and advertising before the war. The hod is in excellent used condition.
