WWI American Aviator Leather Flying Helmet
click for an even bigger image

A multi-piece leather flight helmet as worn by American pilots during World War I. The helmet body is configured from five leather panels in addition to ear sections and a leather collar. The ear openings are covered by cloth mesh and protective leather outer flaps. The extended collar is fitted with snaps so that the collar could be fastened down to corresponding snap fasteners on the collar of a flight jacket or coverall. There is a long narrow leather strap with a buckle on the left side of the helmet which originally attached to a strap on the right side of the helmet, with that strap now missing. The interior of the flight helmet is lined with golden brown corduroy. The helmet shows expected signs of use but is in very good condition.
